LegumES

Maximizing ecosystem services through legume-based farming

The environmental and health benefits of legumes are receiving increasing attention in agriculture and food production. It is well known that legumes can contribute significantly to addressing today's greatest challenges – climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security – but accurately measuring and monitoring these benefits remains difficult.

The LegumES project aims to change this by collecting, integrating, and testing scientific and practical experience in order to optimize legume-based production systems and maximize the ecosystem services they provide. As part of the project, we are developing common definitions, assigning indicators to them, and developing monitoring methods to make the benefits of legumes measurable and trackable.

The four-year project was launched in January 2024 with the participation of 22 partners from 11 countries. Agri Kulti's main task is to further develop and adapt our AgriToolkit sustainability assessment system to provide a more accurate picture of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of legume production. In addition, we are participating in cultivation trials with our partners and strengthening the links between producers and consumers.
